Llamas have a three-compartment digestive system (they are not true ruminants like cattle)
- Compartment 1 (C1): 83% of total volume, functions similarly to a rumen.

- Compartment 3 (C3): 11% of total volume, equivalent to the abomasum.

The digestion process: brief initial chewing before swallowing; primary fermentation in C1 where bacteria and protozoa break down fiber over 20-40 hours; rumination with material regurgitated for additional chewing; and final digestion in C3 where nutrients are absorbed via gastric juices.

Energy needs by physiological status
A study specific to llamas calculated a maintenance requirement of approximately 84.5 kcal of metabolizable energy per kg of metabolic weight, equivalent to about 3.3-4.2 Mcal/day for an adult weighing 130-180 kg. Needs increase noticeably during late gestation, lactation, growth, and work or load-carrying, but should be adjusted individually based on weight, body condition, and forage quality rather than a fixed table of values.
Mineral requirements depend on age, reproductive status, soil, and forage analysis. Calcium, phosphorus, copper, selenium, and vitamin D need particular attention, but should not be supplemented without knowing the actual composition of the diet.
Recommended forages: alfalfa hay (15-18% protein, ideal for gestation and lactation); timothy hay (8-12% protein, excellent for maintenance); tall fescue and oat hay (highly palatable and digestible).
Recommended grazing loads depend on land productivity, climate, paddock rotation, and the need for supplemental hay; they should be calculated from local forage availability rather than a universal figure. Llamas should always have access to clean, fresh water (ideally 4-25°C); intake can range from just a few liters in temperate, moist-pasture conditions to considerably more in heat, on a dry diet, or during lactation.

How much should a llama eat per day?
An adult llama consumes approximately 1.8-2% of its body weight in dry matter daily (roughly 2.7-3 kg of dry matter, or about 3-3.5 kg of hay at 12% moisture, for a 150 kg llama). Actual intake varies with size, forage quality, and physiological status.
Can llamas eat fruits and vegetables?
They aren't necessary, and when offered as treats should be given in small, cut-up amounts to avoid choking. The diet should still be based on forage. Avoid avocado, since ingestion has been linked to toxicity in several mammals, and consult a veterinarian before introducing new foods.
Do llamas need grains in their diet?
Not necessarily. Quality forages alone are sufficient unless the animal is pregnant, nursing, or undergoing heavy work. Grains or concentrates should only be added when forage doesn't meet the animal's needs, introduced gradually and formulated based on weight, forage analysis, and physiological status, since excess starch can cause acidosis.
